JP Fanagan Premiership
Sunday 7th December 2015 – Old Wesley 24 Naas 10
The U20s kept up their unbeaten run this season and now head into the Christmas break on top of Premier 2, two points ahead of Navan. We have won six and drawn one, the same as Navan who are two points behind with less bonus points.
Sunday’s game was a scrappy affair played on a heavy pitch away to Naas. Wesley were clearly the better team from the start but struggled to make the most of the possession. Our captain Luis Petit opened the scoring with a trademark try from a rolling maul after a good line-out. Just before half time Matthew Bursey beat several defenders before touching down under the posts. Mark Strong added the conversion.
Naas got off to a quick start after half time with a converted try on the right after some poor defending by Wesley. The score at that stage was 12-10 to Wesley and Naas were now playing with a bit more confidence. Wesley defended well for 20 minutes and then Bursey got in for his second try of the game which was converted by Strong. We now needed one more try for a bonus point which duly came with the last play of the game by Stephen Dalby.
Overall it was a gritty team performance and the win was fully deserved. We now have a break for Christmas before we play Navan away in a crucial top of the table clash on January 17th, which will definitely have a bearing on the outcome of the league. All support welcome.
