Premiership 2 (Under 20s) Old Wesley 21 NUIG 18
On a beautiful autumnal afternoon the Under 20s travelled to the picturesque setting of Dangan to take on a very strong NUIG.
It was a very tight affair for the first quarter of the match and on their 1st visit into the the Old Wesley 22 the home team executed a snap drop goal to take the lead 3-0. This was followed up with a well taken try in the far left hand corner following pressure by the home team, and with the conversion missed it was 8-0 after 20 minutes.
An excellent take at the restart by Zak Bursey allowed Wesley to move at speed and with some some fine interplay we opened our account with a try in the corner by winger Andrew Vincent. Capt Shane O’Hanrahan added the conversion and Wesley were right back in it 8-7. Following an unfortunate yellow card for the visitors NUIG increased their lead to 11-7. Then after some fine play by Old Wesley in the NUIG 22 the visitors scored another impressive try. Andrew Vincent again dotted down with O’Hanrahan slotting over the conversion from the touch line, and at half time Old Wesley led 11-14.
The start of the 2nd half saw NUIG keep Old Wesley pinned in our 22 and after 10 minutes their out half scored a fine try and with the conversion the home team and were back in the lead 18-14.
To their credit the Old Wesley defence held firm on a number of occasions when NUIG threatened With a dominant scrum Old Wesley scored a great team try following a scrum in the 22 and quick hands across the backline, finished off well by Luke Sweeney. Another superb conversion from O’Hanrahan saw the visitors lead 18-21.
If Carlsberg did defending a magnificent team effort in the defence for the final 5 minutes saw the visitors record a memorable victory. The focus now moves to Greystones away next Sunday 11th November.
