2nds Claim Place in Metro 1 Final with dramatic win over Terenure.
Metro League Div 1 – Old Wesley 9 Terenure 6
In a dramatic finale the 2nds beat Terenure by the narrowest of margins to claim a place in the Metro League Division 1 Final. Both teams were on equal points, Terenure needed just a draw and Old Wesley needed a win, in order to make it to the final.
The intensity of this match was reflected in the score line, 9-6, all penalties, which also reflected the staunch and determined defences of both sides. It was 3 all at half time with Tim Clifford slotting the penalty goal. The sides exchanged 2 further penalty goals as the match approached the final quarter. There were massive performances from the Wesley side, with Tommy O’Callaghen regularly breaking the opposition defence, accurate line out throwing by Ben Burns, and Matthew Bursey and Stephen Boyle doing their bit to cause headaches for the opposition.
As time advanced it looked like Wesley were going to come up just short. But some indiscipline by Terenure, bolstered by great determination by Old Wesley kept them in the game. With 3 minutes to go a Tim Clifford penalty attempt went just wide and it looked like the last opportunity had gone. But deep into the last play of the game Terenure conceded another penalty inside their 22. This time Adam Kennedy was give the task; he stepped up, held his nerve, struck the ball perfectly and bisected the posts. The players and spectators went wild and the job was done.
Old Wesley now meet Lansdowne in the final on Sunday 8th April.
