2nds Take the Bull by the Horns in Clontarf

(23 Jan) The 2nds resumed rugby proceedings with a visit to Clontarf in urgent need of league points following a number of disappointing results.

Playing against the higher ranked team Old Wesley experienced a barrage of one way traffic from the opposition in the opening quarter. We were down by 13 points to nil and a yellow card, and a heavy defeat loomed. But Wesley eventually stretched the opposition defence and Luke Begley crossed for a try.  And minutes later Matthew Bursey caught the hosts napping as he took a quick penalty and crossed for a second try.  Both were converted by Jack Maybury and suddenly Wesley held a 14-13 lead going into half time.

There was still a long way to go but two further penalties by Maybury and a try by Luke Direnzy from a cross kick were enough to claim the victory.

Old Wesley is not going to win this league but this morale boosting result will go a long way towards their current quest to avoid relegation.
