4ths reach league final and promotion play-off

Metro Legue Division 4  –  Old Wesley 4ths 45  UCD 3rds 25

Tries: Michael Triggs, Shane Carmody, Dave Priestman, Luke Corish, Andrew Handcock, Alan Doyle, Luke DeRenzy

Cons: Luke DeRenzy (5)

The 4ths started their game against UCD in Belfield last Friday knowing that nothing less than a bonus point win was needed in order to qualify for the Metro 4 league final against Malahide.   Wesley dominated from the start with converted tries from Michael Triggs and Shane Carmody to lead 14-0 after 10 minutes and were unlucky not to score another.  However, UCD got back into the game scoring a penalty and two converted tries to briefly lead 15-14.   However, Wesley hot back with tries followed from Dave Priestman and Luke Corish by half time to wrap up the try bonus point.

Further tries followed from Andy Handcock & Alan Doyle but indiscipline was putting us on the wrong side of the ref who eventually lost patience and dished out two yellow cards in quick succession.   UCD did their best to make the most of the extra men but Wesley’s defence held firm before Luke DeRenzy intercepted the ball in his own 22 to run length of the field to score under the posts.  Luke’s try capped a great overall performance on his debut with the 4ths along with converting 5 of the 7 tries, a success rate rarely, if ever seen on the 4ths!  With the game over UCD got two late consolation scores to leave it 45-25 at full time.

Thanks to the large group of supporters who braved a cold Friday night in Belfield to cheer on the team.  Hope they and others can travel to Malahide this Friday 15th March for the league final vs. Malahide.   KO 8pm in Estuary Road.
