Under 20s and Junior Rugby Update

Under 20s and Junior Rugby Update, 22nd March 2016

As the season approaches its final few weeks the following is an update on rugby at Under 20 and Junior levels.

The Under 20s are enjoying a fine season.  Their league campaign has ended and Old Wesley has finished a very credible second in JP Fanagan League 2 winning 10 and drawing 1 of their 14 league matches.  The youngsters also got off to a winning start in the Purcell Cup with a win over Greystones and are scheduled to meet Suttonians in the quarter final in a couple of weeks.

At junior level the 2nds finished 6th in Metro League 1.  They recorded 5 wins including two memorable victories over Old Belvedere. Furthermore in the matches lost 6 of these were lost by only one score earning valuable bonus points.  The league included the 2nds teams from all 5 Leinster AIL Division 1a clubs so this was no mean achievement by Old Wesley.

The 3rds competed in Metro League 4 and have finished the campaign in pole position.  They won 11 out of 14 matches but this team also made great use of bonus points scoring a total of 12 in total.  Old Wesley now meet Malahide in the League Final and promotion decider.

The 4ths aree also table toppers in Metro League 6 recording a massive 12 wins out of 13 with one yet to play.  They too will be playing for the League Title and promotion against an opposition yet to be decided but more than likely Naas.

The 5ths competed in Metro League 9.  With one game to play they lie 4th out of 7 in the league table with 7 wins out of 11.  The team cannot finish higher than 3rd but equally are well clear of the relegation zone. This team played rugby at a more social level and regularly featured players over 40 years of age, sometimes over 50 and once even over 60.  This team will compete in the same division next season.

Apart from the 20s two junior teams are still in the Cup. The 3rds will meet Lansdowne in the semi final of the O’Connell Cup this Thursday, 24th March.  And the 4ths will play Tallaght in the quarter final of the Winters Cup in early April.

So overall an excellent season for 20s and Junior Rugby.  Two teams are in a promotion and league title play offs. Three teams are doing well in their respective cup campaigns.  And most importantly not a sign of the R word.

Keep watching this space and please give all our teams your support over the next few weeks.
