Another 1st of Girls rugby in Old Wesley RFC

Saturday 13th April saw another first for Girls Rugby at OWRFC.  On the main pitch at Donnybrook our U14 De La Wes squad took to the field in a Metro League match against Clontarf, while exactly at the same time, a stones throw away over Anglessea Road our U10 squad took to the field at the Old Belvo Girls Blitz.

Our Under 14 girls, for the first time this season were represented by all 6 of our girls.  Cate, Georgie, Grace, Rebecca, Isabella and Mia all came through the IRFU Give It A Try programme two years ago and have consistently improved throughout the season, with some injuries on the way.  It was great to see all 6 girls play together at our home.  Our opposition were too strong for us, however the occasion of the day was to have the same facilities as the adult teams do. Georgie got the teams only try.

A big thank you to Michael, Martin and Patricia for their support as well as the Mens 5ths players for there respect and patience as we finished off our match.

Over the road the U10’s continued to show their resilience in tackling, running with the ball, rucking and scoring tries as they took part in matches against other clubs within the Leinster region.  They also got their first taste of cold rain, as a summers morning turned into a cold and windy afternoon – lesson learned.  Isabella, Edith, Sophie, Eva, Bruna, Millie and Helena didnt stop playing over the hour that they were on the pitch.

We go again next weekend, with the U14’s in a friendly against St Marys before their final league game of the season at Ballycorus on Wednesday 24th April at 6.45pm against Seapoint, while the U10’s also travel to St Marys for their annual Girls Festival of Rugby.

After that our U14 Girls are travelling to Belfast to see Ireland take on Scotland in the Womens 6N, while the U10’s will start the IRFU Give It A Try programme at Wesley College on the 24th of April – for more information on the GIAT programme contact Chris at girlsrugby@oldwesley.ie
