This morning, our newly formed Under 10 Girls squad stepped onto the field of play to take part in the clubs first ever Under 10 Girls Blitz. After training all season with their mixed groups on Sundays the girls got together on Wednesday to get to know each other and to train together for the first time. A huge thank you to Maya for taking on the support role for the team and stepping up as a role model for the girls.
At 9.20am they stepped onto the pitch as a team for the first time. The girls showed their potential on the pitch by tackling strongly, finding space in attack, denying space in defence, rucking and basically not giving up until they were on the ground. The score – it doesnt matter, what matters was that the girls had fun, the girls learned more about rugby, the girls were playing as a team, the girls were communicating with each other, the girls were doing what they needed to do on the pitch. A big thank you to Cate (Under 14 captain for the league match yesterday) for her video of encouragement which the girls really appreciated.
This was a huge weekend for Girls Rugby at Old Wesley RFC as it was the first weekend where we had two girls squads playing matches after the success of the Under 14 Girls yesterday (Saturday) and is a step in the right direction.
Next step is to increase the numbers of the Under 8 and Under 12 squads through reaching out to the local community and showing how much fun rugby can be. If you have any family or friends that have girls that are interested in joining the squads please email Chris on girlsrugby@oldwesley.ie for more details.
