Ireland England Weekend at Old Wesley
Old Wesley is the only place you need to be this year for the Ireland v England 6 Nations weekend, and oh boy do we have a packed line up for you.
Friday – Comedy Lunch & Irish Under 20s
The weekend will kick off on Friday with the now sold out Comedy Lunch sponsored by Airtricity, Guinness, Motorola and Careers Register. This year’s line up will again include the Apres Match team who no doubt will channel their inner Hookie and Pope to give their detailed analysis of the upcoming big game. Again we will be entertained by Barry Murphy, Alan Shortt, and Gary Cooke, and will also be joined by one of the new young shining lights of Irish Comedy and the voice of Irish Mammies world wide, Colm O’Regan. Then that evening the Electric Ireland Irish Under 20s will make their much awaited return to Donnybrook for the first time in almost 10 years to take on their English counterparts. International Friday Night Lights will kick off at 7:05pm.
Saturday – Irish Legends Day
Saturday will then see the return of what is now the bi-annual home Irish Legends game against the English Legends. In recent years Donnybrook has become a home to the Irish Legends and it’s the intimate small stadium setting which offers a great opportunity to see some of the games greats up close again. The evening starts with the pre match Legends Dinner set to kick off at 5:30. This dinner contains a who’s who of recent and past Irish and English greats. As well as being great craic it also serves as a great fundraiser for many rugby charities. Our attention will then turn to the main pitch at 7:45pm for kick off of the match itself. Recent years has shown this is not the light jog out of old and with more and more recently retired players now stepping up and looking forward to being selected, the game has become quite the competitive fixture. While its great to see old friends lining out and squaring up don’t let that fool you, as it’s bound to be a very physical and skillfull game of rugby.
6 Nations Sunday
Then if you have any energy left on Sunday, the club will host a pre 6 Nations brunch. This is a great way to kick off your 6 Nations Sunday in style. It’s open to all Old Wesley members, friends and any travelling English fans who are brave enough to share a full Irish in the back yard of the enemy on match day morning. Brunch will be served at 11am and will be accompanied by a very special guest speaker. It will wrap up by 1pm and those lucky enough to have match tickets can stroll a few hundred meters to the Aviva and soak up the atmosphere on route, while others not so lucky can retire to the two big screens upstairs and downstairs in the club and start the pre match analysis and preamble in ernest. And if you are going to the match don’t forget to come back to Donnybrook for celebrations or post mortems
