Following the summer break, everyone at Old Wesley RFC is excited about a return to rugby for the 2023/24 season. Having seen our Senior 1st XV reach the play offs of AIL 1B last season, in addition to our Senior 3rd XV concluding the season by lifting the O’Connell Cup for the 2nd year in a row, there is a great appetite to continue to improve and grow across all levels of the club.
Work has continued behind the scenes as we have made some changes and restructured the Junior Rugby programme at Old Wesley RFC. We want to keep our community informed of these changes and hope to grow our numbers further by offering Rugby in a way that meets the needs of players across all levels of the game.
Senior 3rd XV:
Following a successful season, lifting the O’Connell Cup, in addition to reaching the Metro Division 2 League final, our Senior 3rd XV will be looking to build on the previous campaign and compete in Division 3 of the Metro League, following changes to the Leinster Junior League format. Our 3rd XV has traditionally been constructed of players who have been longserving club members, many of whom have represented our 1st & 2nd XV. The 3rd XV are looking forward to welcoming a fresh injection of players into the team.

Old Wesley Colts XV:
The Colts XV is a newly established team who will compete in Metro League Division 4/5 (qualifier dependent.) The aim of establishing this new group is to encourage a new pathway of development for our young players graduating from the U20s programme. We are aspirational in having 80% of this team made up of players under the age of 24 and aim to adopt a development centred approach that exposes players to high quality of coaching, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills and ultimately fall into a level that meets their needs and skills, whether it be Senior 1st XV or Senior 5th XV down the line. This is a part of the pathway which the club views as being critical, in affording players the opportunity to continue to play with teammates with whom they have forged relationships and bonds during their time at U20s.

Senior 5th XV.
Our Senior 5th XV is in place to offer a level of Rugby that is centred around enjoyment, fun, whilst also challenging players to develop their skills in a safe and supportive environment. We are aware of the stress that can consume people in their day-to-day work life or during their studies and at Old Wesley we want to offer an outlet that encourages players to come train and play in stress free environment with likeminded people. Our Senior 5th XV will compete in Division 6 of the Metro League this season. The success of the 5ths on the field we believe can be attributed to the people centred environment that our coaches look to create.

As we look to regenerate our player pool at the Junior end of the club, we would encourage anyone who is keen to try, or return to, rugby to come down to our Junior training sessions every Wednesday at 7:15pm in Energia Park. I look forward to meeting all the new faces.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all players, coaches, management, volunteers and supporters back to Old Wesley RFC for what we hope will be a memorable season ahead.

Rugby Coordinator at Old Wesley RFC
