Old Wesley win Moran Cup with comfortable win over Greystones
Moran Cup Final – Old Wesley 32 Greystones 7
Old Wesley 4ths were comfortable winners over Greystones in the Moran Cup final played in Donnybrook last Friday; a trophy last won by Old Wesley 3rds in 2014. Conditions were not ideal with steady rain throughout the game. Wesley started well keeping the ball in the Greystones half. That early pressure was rewarded in the 10th minute when Sean Ballance kicked a penalty to lead 3-0. Tries soon followed from Mark Rouse and Sam Connor to leave the score at 15-0 after 25 minutes. Towards the end of the first half Greystones managed to put some phases together and from a penalty kick to the corner, rumbled over under the posts leaving the score 15-7 at the break. Greystones momentum continued into the 2nd half but could not breach the Wesley defence. Any hopes of a Greystones comeback ended with a Sean Ballance try on 51 minutes (22-7). Excellent line kicking from Luke DeRenzy kept the pressure on Greystones and further tries followed from Andy Handcock and Thomas Bulfin to give a final score of 32-7. Having finished runners up in the Metro 4 league, this cup win capped another great season for the 4ths and started what proved to be a memorable weekend for junior rugby.
This was the 4th time that Old Wesley has won this competition.
