Rugby for All: A Special Day of Inclusion at Old Wesley

Last Saturday, 22 August, Old Wesley RFC proudly hosted a truly special day celebrating inclusion, friendship, and the power of rugby to bring people together. Old Wesley President Wayne Sheridan welcomed members of South Dublin Special Olympics Sports Club to Donnybrook for a fun filled morning of rugby. Having volunteered with Special Olympics since 2003, Wayne was delighted to bring together his “two clubs” for an occasion that perfectly reflected the spirit of inclusivity that exists across both organisations.
The Special Olympics athletes were joined by Old Wesley’s Visually Impaired Rugby team and Girls Rugby section for a series of enjoyable rugby activities and games, creating an environment where athletes of all abilities could participate, compete, and most importantly, have fun together. Adding to the significance of the day was the presence of Joe Geraghty, Paralympian, President of Vision Sports Ireland, and one of its co-founding members, who attended to witness the occasion and support the growing links between inclusive sporting communities. The excitement levels were raised even further when Leo the Leinster Lion made a surprise appearance, delighting players and spectators alike.
As a memento of the day, each Special Olympics athlete received an Old Wesley baseball cap or an Old Wesley boot bag to take home, while everyone enjoyed a charcoal barbecue prepared and served by fellow Special Olympics volunteers. The event also helped raise funds for the upcoming Old Wesley Visually Impaired Rugby Tour to Japan.

Throughout the day, former Leinster and Italy international Ian McKinley undertook an impressive 12-hour kicking clinic, with proceeds contributing towards the tour fund. The day highlighted what makes rugby such a unique sport: its ability to welcome and unite people from all backgrounds and abilities. Old Wesley RFC remains committed to promoting opportunities for everyone to enjoy rugby and continues to encourage athletes of all abilities to get involved in the game.

A huge thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, supported, and helped make the day such a memorable success.

Rugby truly is a game for all. #aclubforlife!
