Sunday 23rd Sept – Under 21s win Bowl at Blackrock ‘Castle Festival’
Old Wesley Under 21s in only their second outing of the season won the Bowl in the inaugural Blackrock ’Castle’ Festival for U21s. The tournament which is for the ‘Castle Trophy’ was last played for at senior level in the early 1990s but was ended with the advent of the All Ireland League. Ironically, Old Wesley were the holders of the trophy.
On a lovely sunny afternoon at Stradbrook, Old Wesley were drawn in an extremely difficult group with UCD, Lansdowne and Garryowen. They got off to a good start with a draw 10 points all against a fancied UCD side. They then had an excellent win against Garryowen before going down narrowly to Lansdowne. These results meant that Old Wesley had qualified for the Bowl final to play the hosts Blackrock and in a very entertaining match they ran out worthy winners by 8-0 with tries by David Potterton and a penalty by Greg Hawe.
This is an excellent start to the season and was truly a Squad effort, which all bodes well for the season ahead.
