Women’s Touch Tournament Report

As the union season draws to a close, touch rugby is coming into full swing. The touch spring season kicked off with a bang on the 15th of April with an all-women social tournament hosted by Old Wesley. After running a 3-week ‘Introduction to Touch’ training course throughout March and April in Energia Park, the aim of the night was to encourage new women into the sport and introduce them to the club.

Under the watchful eye of Brian Leveau, Head of Touch, the round robin kicked off at 17:30. There were 4 teams vying for the cup, made up of all abilities from complete beginners to capped internationals. 4 teams, 3 matches, and 2 MVPs later we had one winner. In keeping with the feminine theme, it was the Sugababes who were victorious, captained by Lianna Prizeman. The tournament MVP was Charlotte Vaurillon, with most improved being Isabelle Deladiennée.

Following the round robin was a display of superb touch footy. The teams were amalgamated for a final All-star match. Both sides going score for score in an intense final, it took until the last minutes to differentiate the two. Peggy Mulligan secured the winning try after an epic link up, making her the All-star woman of the match.

The evening ended in the clubhouse with some questionable karaoke from all involved. It’s safe to say, of the ample talent shown on the night, all of it lies on the pitch!

A massive thank you to all those involved in organising the tournament, the coaching staff for hosting intro training sessions prior to the event and the male cohort of touch who showed up to support their girls.
