Seniors lose narrowly to Belvo

AIL – Old Wesley 9  Old Belvedere 10

Old Wesley’s final home game of 2023 saw them welcome Old Belvedere to Donnybrook Stadium.

The game was scoreless for 25 minutes as both teams looked to feel each other out.  However, it was Eoin Monahan who scored the first points of the game from the tee to make it 3-0 to the home side.  Soon after, Monahan got the opportunity to make it 6-0 which was the halftime score.

The fun did not stop at halftime as Old Belvedere and Old Wesley’s under ten girls team took to the field at half time to keep the halftime crowd entertained – a first of its kind in this fixture.

Old Wesley came out the blocks in the second half and looked to attack Belvo’s line, however mistakes in midfield meant Belvedere were let off the hook more than once.

Monahan won a penalty on the halfway line which he kicked to put Wesley 9-0 ahead with just over 30 minutes to go. In the 51st minute, Belvo’s 13, Jayden Beckett, cut inside and took the space and somehow wriggled out of four tackles to score the only try of the day. Belvedere converted and cut the game to 9-7.

15 minutes later, a high tackle on Old Belvedere gave them an opportunity to go ahead which David Wilkinson took to make it 10-9 to the away side.  Old Wesley looked to find that elusive last score in the final minutes of the game but just came up short in the end.

We look forward to the reverse of this fixture in the New Year!
