Seniors lose to Garryowen

AIL Promotion Semi-final – Old Wesley 21 Garryowen 32  –  20th April 2024

Old Wesley’s bid for promotion to Division 1a came to a disappointing end with a loss to Garryowen in a highly entertaining and exciting game at Donnybrook.

Played in almost summer conditions Old Wesley were first on the scoreboard after 6 minutes with a Cronan Gleeson try after a drive off a line out, converted by Ian Cassidy.  Garryowen levelled the scores on 20 minutes with a converted try and just three minutes later Tom Larke weaved his way over on the left wing for Wesley’s second try, again converted by the reliable Cassidy.  Shortly after, the visitors crossed again for an unconverted try.

It looked like Wesley would go into break with a narrow lead, but a converted try by the Limerick side gave them the lead for the first time in the match and crucially they lead 19-14 going into half time.

Garryowen extended the lead to 8 points with a penalty goal.  Then on the 60 minute mark a Barbarians style try that started in Wesley’s 22 and went through many phases and hands was finished off by Eoin Deegan, and converted by Cassidy putting Wesley back to within 1 point.  But the comeback was short lived as Garryowen crossed again for an unconverted try.  Now trailing by 6 points Wesley threw everything at the opposition, egged on by the large home support.   But the opposition defence held firm and a late try by Garryowen sealed their victory.

Huge congratulations to the Senior team players, coaches, and management for a wonderful season.  The players, in particular, deserve a well-earned break before the start of a new campaign next season.
